OPL Error 300: Cannot Connect to SMB Server (SMBv1 Fix)
Error 300 is almost always a protocol mismatch, not a broken console or a bad cable.
Short answer: Open PS2 Loader’s network code speaks SMBv1 (Server Message Block version 1) only. Modern Windows and many NAS systems disable SMBv1 by default for security, so OPL cannot see the share at all and reports Error 300. Re-enable the SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support client on the PC that hosts the share, confirm the share permissions, and retest.
Fix on Windows
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off (or Settings → Optional features, depending on your Windows version).
- Enable SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support — the Client component is the essential one for OPL to reach a Windows share.
- Restart the PC after enabling it.
- Confirm the shared folder itself allows the user OPL connects as (read access is enough for loading; write access only if you want OPL to save configuration or VMC files to the share).
- In OPL, check the network settings: PC IP address, share name, user, and password must match the Windows share exactly — a typo in the share name also produces Error 300.
Security note (do not skip)
SMBv1 is disabled by default for a reason: it has known vulnerabilities. Only enable it on a trusted home network, only for the PC that hosts your PS2 share, and consider turning it off again when you are not using OPL over the network. If that trade-off bothers you, USB, HDD, or MX4SIO loading avoids SMB entirely — see the storage comparison for the speed and hassle trade-offs.
If Error 300 persists
- Ping the PS2’s IP from the PC and the PC’s IP from the PS2’s network test if your OPL build offers one — a cabling or IP problem looks identical to a protocol problem.
- Try a wired connection first. The PS2’s network port is on the Fat’s network adapter or, for Slims, built in; Wi-Fi bridges add failure modes.
- Check firewalls: Windows Firewall or a third-party firewall blocking SMB (port 445) produces the same error.
- Test with a second share or a second PC if you can — that isolates whether the PC or the console side is at fault.
