Buy a FreeDVDBoot Burn Kit: DVD-R Discs and a USB DVD Burner

Two purchases, both cheap: the right discs and a burner that writes them slowly.

Short answer: Affiliate disclosure: links marked “Buy” may earn this site a commission at no extra cost to you (Amazon tag oliver062-20; see the affiliate disclosure). Every guide also names a non-affiliate alternative. You need DVD-R discs (not DVD+R, not CD-R, not rewritable) and a way to write them at low speed. If your PC already has a DVD writer, you only need the discs. If it does not, a USB external DVD burner is the one purchase that matters.

DVD-R discs

Buy single-layer DVD-R (4.7GB), preferably a trusted brand such as Verbatim, in a small pack first. The Verbatim DVD-R discs are the reference this site uses because they are the discs the burning guides assume. Non-affiliate alternative: any major-brand DVD-R from a local electronics shop — brand matters more than the shop. Avoid no-name bulk spindles: a bad batch is the most common cause of a disc that burns but will not boot (see red screen).

USB DVD burner

Any laptop without an internal drive needs one. The Rioddas USB external DVD burner is the reference used on this site. Non-affiliate alternative: any USB DVD writer that supports DVD-R at 1x–4x and has decent reviews for write quality — the feature that matters is slow, stable writing, not read speed or bundled software.

What not to buy

  • DVD+R or DVD+RW — FreeDVDBoot’s disc must be DVD-R (the README and burning guides are explicit).
  • CD-R or CD-RW — the ISO is a DVD image; a CD cannot hold it.
  • A 100-disc spindle on your first attempt — buy 5–10, prove the burn works, then stock up.
  • “Archival gold” discs at ten times the price — ordinary Verbatim DVD-R is what the guides are written for.

Failure = kit guide

If your burned disc fails, do not buy more of the same first. Work the ImgBurn guide and the red-screen guide — media, speed, and finalisation explain most failures, and a new burner rarely fixes a settings problem.
