FreeDVDBoot vs FreeMCBoot: Gateway vs Daily Driver
They are not rivals. One is the key, the other is the lock you install with it — and the homepage already says so, in brief.
Short answer: FreeDVDBoot boots from a burned DVD and needs no already-modified console, but you must insert the disc every time and it wears the laser. FreeMCBoot boots from a memory card instantly and silently, but you need an already-exploited console (or FreeDVDBoot) to install it in the first place. The standard setup is both: FreeDVDBoot to install FreeMCBoot, then FreeMCBoot for daily use.
Side by side
- Entry: FreeDVDBoot = DVD-R disc. FreeMCBoot = memory card.
- Install barrier: FreeDVDBoot = zero (any supported console + burner + disc). FreeMCBoot = high without FreeDVDBoot (needs a modded console, a cheat disc path, or FreeDVDBoot).
- Boot speed: FreeDVDBoot = seconds to minutes (disc spin + exploit + uLaunchELF). FreeMCBoot = near-instant menu.
- Laser wear: FreeDVDBoot = every boot spins the disc. FreeMCBoot = none after install.
- Persistence: FreeDVDBoot = per-boot only; remove the disc and the console is stock again. FreeMCBoot = persists on the card until you remove or reformat it.
- Models: FreeDVDBoot = all Slims + supported Fats only. FreeMCBoot = most Fat/early Slims directly; late 900xx needs Fortuna instead.
The synergy, step by step
Burn FreeDVDBoot, boot to uLaunchELF, run the FreeMCBoot installer from USB, install to a genuine 8MB card in Slot 1, reboot without the disc. Full steps are in the install guide. Keep the FreeDVDBoot disc afterwards: if the card is ever wiped or corrupted, the disc reinstalls FreeMCBoot in minutes without needing another modded console.
Which one if you only pick one
- Only FreeDVDBoot: you use homebrew occasionally, you do not want to modify a card, or your console is a late 900xx where FreeMCBoot cannot boot directly.
- Only FreeMCBoot (after a FreeDVDBoot install): you play daily and want instant, silent boots.
- Neither yet: start with FreeDVDBoot. It is the only one of the two that works on a completely stock, supported console with no prior softmod.
