FreeDVDBoot vs Modchip: Softmod Disc vs Hardware Chip

One costs nothing and touches nothing inside. The other costs money and a soldering iron — and keeps working when the laser dies.

Short answer: FreeDVDBoot is free, requires no soldering, and leaves the console stock when the disc is removed — but it needs a working DVD drive and a supported DVD Player version, and it wears the laser if used as a daily boot method. A modchip (Matrix Infinity, Modbo, and similar) is soldered inside, costs money and skill or a repair shop, but then boots homebrew and discs without a softmod disc and without depending on the DVD Player exploit. For most users, FreeDVDBoot first is the right order: try the free, reversible path, and only consider a chip if your model or drive rules it out.

Side by side

  • Cost: FreeDVDBoot = disc + burner time. Modchip = chip + install labour.
  • Skill/risk: FreeDVDBoot = no opening the console. Modchip = soldering on a 20-year-old board; a bad install can kill the console.
  • Reversibility: FreeDVDBoot = remove the disc (and the card, if you installed one) and the console is stock. Modchip = desoldering to fully reverse.
  • Model coverage: FreeDVDBoot = Slims + Fat 2.10/2.12/3.04 only. Modchip = essentially any PS2, including 500xx and 2.14 Fats FreeDVDBoot cannot touch.
  • Drive dependence: FreeDVDBoot = needs a working laser to boot. Modchip = can boot from memory card/HDD paths even with a dead drive (depending on chip and setup).
  • Interaction warning: a modchip can block FreeDVDBoot itself — if the browser shows “PlayStation 2 disc” instead of “DVD Video”, the chip is intercepting identification (see that guide).

When a modchip is honestly the better choice

  • Your Fat is a 500xx or 2.14 model FreeDVDBoot cannot serve, and you do not want to use Fortuna or a newer exploit.
  • Your laser/drive is dead and you still want to use the console (with HDD/USB loading after install).
  • You want a permanent, disc-free boot that does not depend on any softmod card surviving.

When FreeDVDBoot wins

  • Your console is a Slim or a supported Fat — the free path works, so paying for a chip buys nothing you need.
  • You want to preserve the console unmodified, or you are unsure and want to try homebrew before committing.
  • You only need a one-time install of FreeMCBoot or Fortuna — the disc is a key, not a lifestyle.

Site stance

This site does not sell or install modchips, and modchip links are not affiliate offers here. The comparison exists so you can make an informed choice, including the choice to stop burning FreeDVDBoot discs for a model it was never going to serve.
