FreeMCBoot Memory Card Format Error: Clone Cards vs Genuine 8MB
The installer fails, or mc0: misbehaves, and the card works fine in the normal browser. That contradiction has one usual cause.
Short answer: Use a genuine Sony 8MB memory card (SCPH-10020) in Slot 1 as the FreeMCBoot install target. Cheap unofficial 64MB and 128MB clone cards often fail during the installer’s format/write step even though the normal PS2 browser reads them — the installer’s stricter access pattern exposes the clone’s weaker controller. Once FreeMCBoot is installed on a genuine card, larger cards can still hold saves in Slot 2.
Symptoms
- Installer reports an error formatting the memory card, or fails partway through writing.
- uLaunchELF does not show mc0:/ or mc1:/ reliably, or shows them then drops them.
- The same card browses saves normally in the unmodified PS2 browser.
Fix
- Put a genuine Sony 8MB card in Slot 1 and install to that card. Borrow one if you must — the install takes minutes, and the card can then stay as your boot card.
- Do not install to a clone card and hope: a half-written FreeMCBoot install is harder to clean up than a clean retry on a genuine card.
- After a successful install, keep the boot card in Slot 1 and use other cards (including larger clones) in Slot 2 for save storage.
- If a genuine card also fails, try the other slot, clean the card contacts gently, and re-run the installer from a freshly formatted FAT32 USB drive (see mass:/ empty).
Buying advice
When buying a card for this job, “genuine Sony 8MB” is the spec that matters, not capacity. A used genuine 8MB card in good condition beats a brand-new 128MB clone for installing. See the install kit guide for what to look for and what to avoid, and never buy a card marketed as “pre-installed FreeMCBoot” as your install target — install it yourself from FreeDVDBoot so you know exactly what is on it.
