Understanding that saves you from fake version pages.

Short answer: FreeDVDBoot was released by CTurt on 2020-06-14 as a GitHub repository, not as a versioned software release. The repository has zero releases and zero tags; its files live in folders (PREBUILT ISOs, Filesystems, PAYLOADS) and are updated by commits. Anyone offering “FreeDVDBoot v2.4” or a similarly numbered download is not describing CTurt’s project — do not trust that file.

Timeline

2020-06-14: CTurt publishes FreeDVDBoot (repository created 2020-06-14T14:50:38Z).

2020-06-27: CTurt’s technical write-up (cturt.github.io/freedvdboot.html).

2020-08-09: demonstration video of the proof of concept on a PS2 (per PS2 Dev Wiki).

Since then: repository commits continue the project as files, not releases. The prebuilt ISOs in the repository are the download — there is no installer, no updater, and no version check inside them.

File inventory (the actual “versions”)

All PS2 Slims – English language.iso — 1,366,016 bytes, MD5 2f79111a91c8b90f4068d8c284dd7716.

Some 2.10 models and all 2.12.iso — 7,344,128 bytes, MD5 e47c861f376df877ce02cbe0c10b97b9.

3.04 only – M+maybe other regions except J – English language.iso — 1,370,112 bytes, MD5 503415ee98580dd1d18f9d7031af5abd.

All three MD5s were re-verified against GitHub downloads on 2026-10-24 (see the homepage checksums section). If a file you downloaded does not match, it is not the GitHub file — re-download from GitHub, do not trust the copy.

How to tell a fake version page

It names a version number (v2.x, 2024 edition, 2025 update) that CTurt’s repository does not have.

It offers an installer (.exe) for FreeDVDBoot itself — FreeDVDBoot is a disc image, not a Windows program.

It claims a new supported version (for example, 3.00 support) without a repository commit or a dated, sourced report like YADE’s.

It hides the host behind a generic Download button. This site names GitHub first and Terabox as a labelled mirror, for exactly this reason.

Next steps

Full compatibility list

DVD Player versions explained

Download from GitHub (homepage)

Verified against: GitHub repository metadata (created 2020-06-14, 0 releases, 0 tags) and CTurt write-up date, checked 2026-10-24; ISO sizes/MD5s re-verified by download + hash.

Here is what each version means, in one place.

Short answer: FreeDVDBoot’s prebuilt ISOs support DVD Player 2.10 (named models only), 2.12 (regions U, J, G), and 3.04 (region M tested in emulator, other regions except J a guess). They do not support 3.00, 3.02, 2.14, or earlier versions outside that list. Slim consoles do not use this list at all — they use the universal Slim ISO regardless of version.

The supported three

2.10: certain models only. Working examples: SCPH-30001 R, SCPH-30000, SCPH-30004 R (specific ROMGEN codes in the README). SCPH-39004 listed as not working. Shared file with 2.12.

2.12: regions U, J, and G. Shared file with 2.10 (7,344,128 bytes).

3.04: region M tested in emulator only; README guesses most other regions EUMACDG except J will work with English set. Own file (1,370,112 bytes).

The unsupported versions, and why

3.00 / 3.02: the SCPH-500xx (v9/v10) versions. No payload in CTurt’s repository. YADE is reported to cover 3.00E (see the YADE note).

2.14: Sony patched the FreeDVDBoot vulnerability in 2.14 (README’s own words: “Sony actually patched this one in 2.14 lol”). Later Fat firmware is not a FreeDVDBoot target.

1.xx / 2.00 and early launch versions: outside the supported list; early Japanese launch models are reported with black screens or no support in the compatibility list.

Slim versions (3.10 / 3.11 filesystem): these are Slim filesystem names in the repository, not Fat DVD Player versions — do not confuse them with the Fat list. Slims use the universal ISO.

How to find yours

Boot with no disc, press Triangle, read the DVD Player line — full steps in how to check. Record the version including its region letter: “3.04” alone is less useful than “3.04M”, and “2.10” alone is less useful than the model + ROMGEN for the named-model check.

YADE: The Newer PS2 DVD Exploit for DVD Player 3.00 (What We Know)

For 500xx owners, this is the most interesting PS2 news in years — and it is still a note, not a download page, until its files are verified.

Short answer: YADE (YetAnotherDvdExploit), reported 2025-12-17 by Alexander Argentakis (MFDGaming), is a PS2 DVD exploit similar to FreeDVDBoot that is reported to work fully on DVD Player version 3.00E and possibly 3.00A. That matters because 3.00/3.02 is exactly the range FreeDVDBoot does not cover — including every SCPH-500xx. This page does not link a YADE download: until its repository and files are verified the same way FreeDVDBoot’s were, YADE is a research lead for 500xx owners, not a setup guide.

What is reported

Discovered/reported 2025-12-17 by MFDGaming (Alexander Argentakis).

Described as a DVD exploit for the PS2, similar to FreeDVDBoot.

Reported as fully working on DVD Player 3.00E, and possibly 3.00A.

A reverse-engineering write-up of DVD Player 3.00E was also reported in November 2025, which is consistent with a new exploit built on that analysis.

What it would change if verified

A verified YADE path would close FreeDVDBoot’s biggest gap: Fat consoles on DVD Player 3.00/3.02, above all the 500xx family, which today has no prebuilt FreeDVDBoot ISO. It would not replace FreeDVDBoot for Slims or for 2.10/2.12/3.04 Fats, where FreeDVDBoot is already verified and documented. Think of it as a second DVD exploit for a different firmware range, not a successor.

What to do if you own a 500xx today

Do not burn FreeDVDBoot ISOs hoping one will work on 3.00 — the payload for that version is not in CTurt’s repository.

Watch for a verified YADE release and setup guide from its own repository before downloading anything labelled YADE from a mirror.

In the meantime, Fortuna covers a wide Fat range (see the Fortuna comparison), and a modchip remains an option (see the modchip comparison).

This page will be updated when YADE’s files are verified — it will not be quietly turned into a download page on the strength of a report alone.

Next steps

PS2 Fat guide (why 500xx fails)

FreeDVDBoot vs Fortuna

Full compatibility list

Verified against: PS2 Dev Wiki Vulnerabilities page (YADE entry: MFDGaming, 2025-12-17, 3.00E and possibly 3.00A), checked 2026-10-24. No YADE file, hash, or download is claimed.
