FreeDVDBoot on Sony Bravia TV and PS2 TV Units: What Is Actually Supported

A short, careful page: the README says Bravia TV units work. It does not publish a per-model test table, and neither does this site.

Short answer: CTurt’s README lists Sony Bravia TV units alongside all PS2 Slim consoles as supported, using the universal Slim ISO. That is the extent of the verified claim. This site has not tested a specific Bravia model, and the homepage’s old claim that one exact model “runs flawlessly” has been removed for exactly that reason.

What to do if you own one

Use the universal Slim ISO (All PS2 Slims – English language.iso) from the homepage, GitHub first.

Burn it to a DVD-R at the lowest speed and finalise it, exactly as for a Slim.

Set the TV/PS2 system language to English before booting the disc.

If the disc does not boot, work through the Slim troubleshooting path (black screen, disc not spinning) — TV-integrated drives age the same way Slim drives do.

What not to assume

Do not assume every Bravia TV ever made has a PS2 inside — only the integrated PS2 TV models are relevant here. Do not assume a TV’s DVD drive reads burned DVD-R as reliably as a console drive; if a real DVD movie also fails to play, the drive or laser is the problem, not the exploit. And do not buy a Bravia TV specifically for FreeDVDBoot on the strength of this page: the README-level claim is real, but it is not a per-model guarantee.

PS2 TV (the later integrated model)

Fortuna/OpenTuna documentation covers models up to the PS2 TV, which is a useful cross-check that TV-integrated PS2 hardware is in scope for the wider softmod scene. For FreeDVDBoot specifically, the README’s Bravia wording is the source — if your TV-integrated unit is not covered by the Slim ISO in practice, Fortuna is the next entry point to investigate (see the comparison).

Next steps

Full compatibility list

Verified against: CTurt FreeDVDBoot README (Easy setup for all PS2 Slim consoles / Bravia TV), checked 2026-10-24. No per-model Bravia test is claimed.

PS2 Model Number Finder: SCPH, Region Digit, and What It Cannot Tell You

The sticker on the back tells you the family and the region. It does not, by itself, tell you whether FreeDVDBoot will boot.

Short answer: Find SCPH-XXXXX on the sticker on the back or bottom of the console. The digits give the family (100xx/300xx/390xx/500xx Fat; 700xx/750xx/770xx/900xx Slim) and, roughly, the region. But compatibility is decided by the DVD Player version (Triangle check), not the model number — especially for Fat, where the same family can behave differently.

Families

Fat: 100xx/150xx/180xx (early Japanese launch), 300xx, 350xx, 370xx, 390xx, 500xx.

Slim: 700xx, 750xx, 770xx, 900xx.

TV: Sony Bravia TV units with an integrated PS2 (for example the KDL-22PX300 family) are listed as supported in the README, but this site has not published a test of one exact model.

Region digit (a hint, not a rule)

For Fat numbering, the last digit is commonly: 0 = Japan, 1 = North America, 2 = Australia, 3 = UK, 4 = Europe, 5 = Korea, 6 = Hong Kong/Singapore, 7 = Taiwan, 8 = Russia, and 12 (as in 30012) = Mexico. Slim numbering differs slightly — 70012 is the USA model, for example. Use the digit to identify where your console was sold and which region’s discs and language settings to expect. Do not use it to pick an ISO: a European 390xx and a North American 390xx can still differ in DVD Player version and in result.

What to record before asking for help

Full model number (SCPH-XXXXX) and, for Slim 900xx, the datecode on the sticker.

DVD Player version from the Triangle screen, including any region letter.

Which ISO file you burned, on what disc type (DVD-R?), and at what speed.

What happens on boot: black screen, red screen, disc not spinning, or uLaunchELF appearing.

GSC queries this page answers

Searchers typing SCPH-50000, SCPH-39004, SCPH-70004, SCPH-90001, SCPH-90004, or SCPH-37000L are usually one step from a download decision. The honest answer for most of them is in the compatibility list: Slims yes, 500xx no, 390xx partial, and everything Fat depends on the DVD Player version.

FreeDVDBoot for PS2 Fat: 300xx, 390xx, and Why 500xx Does Not Work

Fat owners must check first and burn second. Half of all Fat failures are people burning the wrong file — or a file that never existed for their machine.

Short answer: A PS2 Fat works with FreeDVDBoot only on DVD Player 2.10 (named models only), 2.12, or 3.04. SCPH-300xx and some SCPH-390xx units fall in that range. SCPH-500xx units run DVD Player 3.00 or 3.02 and cannot use any prebuilt FreeDVDBoot ISO — if you own a 500xx, do not burn these files hoping for a different result.

Check before you download

Boot with no disc, press Triangle, and read the DVD Player line (see how to check). Then match it below. The model sticker alone is not enough: the same SCPH family can carry different DVD Player versions, and 390xx results vary unit by unit.

300xx

DVD Player versions in this family include 2.10 variants. The README names three working examples for 2.10: SCPH-30001 R, SCPH-30000, and SCPH-30004 R, each with a specific ROMGEN code. If your 2.10 unit is not one of those, it is unconfirmed — try it, but do not treat success as guaranteed, and record your exact model and ROMGEN if you report a result.

390xx

Marked Partial in the PS2 Dev Wiki compatibility list. Some 390xx units work on 2.12; others report disc read errors or a black screen, and SCPH-39004 is explicitly listed in the README as not working for 2.10 (todo). If your 390xx fails, the most likely explanations in order are: wrong version, worn laser, or a bad burn — work through black screen and red screen before concluding the model is unsupported.

500xx: not supported, and here is why

SCPH-500xx is the v9/v10 Fat. Its DVD Player is 3.00 (v9) or 3.02 (v10). Neither version has a prebuilt FreeDVDBoot payload in CTurt’s repository, and the supported list stops at 2.10, 2.12, and 3.04. A site that lists 500xx as “selective” or “supported” for FreeDVDBoot is wrong, and this site previously made that mistake on its homepage — it has been corrected. Your options are a different entry point (Fortuna covers a wide Fat range; see the comparison), a newer exploit such as YADE for 3.00E (see the YADE note), or a modchip — each with its own trade-offs, covered in FreeDVDBoot vs modchip.

Fat files at a glance

2.10 and 2.12 share ONE file: Some 2.10 models and all 2.12.iso, 7,344,128 bytes, MD5 e47c861f376df877ce02cbe0c10b97b9.

Short answer: Every PS2 Slim — 700xx, 750xx, 770xx, and 900xx — uses the same file: All PS2 Slims – English language.iso. Burn it to a DVD-R, set the console language to English, and boot it into uLaunchELF. Late 900xx models are the reason this matters: their BIOS blocks standard FreeMCBoot, but FreeDVDBoot still works because it enters through the DVD Player, not the memory card.

The file

All PS2 Slims – English language.iso, 1,366,016 bytes, MD5 2f79111a91c8b90f4068d8c284dd7716. Get it from GitHub first via the homepage; the Terabox link there is a labelled mirror whose copy has not been independently hash-verified, so check the MD5 after download whichever host you use.

Steps

Download the Slim ISO (do not extract or modify it).

Burn it to a DVD-R — not a CD, preferably not DVD+RW — at the lowest speed your burner offers, with finalise/disc-at-once enabled. See burning with ImgBurn.

Boot the Slim with no disc, press Circle for System Configuration, and set the language to English.

Insert the burned disc. uLaunchELF should appear within a few seconds; on a worn laser or a poor burn it can take up to about 3 minutes (README note), so wait before declaring failure.

From uLaunchELF you can run homebrew from USB, or install FreeMCBoot or Fortuna for permanent memory-card booting (see installing FreeMCBoot).

900xx and the FreeMCBoot blockade

Late Slims (SCPH-9000x with BIOS 2.30 and later, roughly datecode 8C onward) cannot boot standard FreeMCBoot directly, because Sony removed the ability to update the ROM from the memory card path. FreeDVDBoot bypasses that entirely: it does not use the memory card to enter, so the blockade does not apply. Once inside uLaunchELF, you can install Fortuna-style triggers if you want memory-card booting on a 900xx — see the Fortuna guide.

If it does not boot

Language not English — the most common Slim failure. Recheck it.

DVD+R or DVD+RW instead of DVD-R, or a high-speed burn — re-burn slow and finalised.

Disc not spinning — Slim lid sensors. See the lid-sensor guide.

Black or red screen that persists — see black screen and red screen guides.

How to Check Your PS2 DVD Player Version (Triangle Button Method)

Thirty seconds, no tools, no disc in the drive. This is the check that decides everything for Fat owners.

Short answer: Turn the PS2 on with no disc inside, go to the browser, and press Triangle. The Version screen lists your DVD Player version. If it reads 2.10, 2.12, or 3.04, a prebuilt FreeDVDBoot ISO exists for your Fat. Anything else means the prebuilt ISOs do not cover your machine.

Steps

Turn the console on with the disc tray empty.

At the browser screen, press Triangle on controller 1.

Read the line labelled DVD Player (for example, 2.10, 2.12, 3.04, or 3.00).

Write down the full version including any region letter, and your model number from the sticker on the back or bottom (SCPH-XXXXX).

Match the version against the compatibility list before downloading anything.

While you are there: set the language

In System Configuration (press Circle from the browser with no disc), set the system language to English. FreeDVDBoot relies on fixed memory offsets in the DVD Player program, and other languages change the memory contents enough to break the exploit. This is not a preference — it is a requirement in the README, and it is the first thing to check if you get a black screen.

What each result means

Slim, any version: use the universal Slim ISO. You do not need this check to pick a file, but it is still useful to record.

Fat, 2.10: only named models are confirmed (SCPH-30000, SCPH-30001 R, SCPH-30004 R). Other 2.10 units are unconfirmed.

Fat, 2.12: regions U, J, and G.

Fat, 3.04: region M tested in emulator; other regions except J are a README guess, not a verified result.

Fat, 3.00 / 3.02 / 2.14 / anything else: no prebuilt FreeDVDBoot ISO covers you. See the Fat guide for honest alternatives.

Common mistakes

Checking with a disc already in the drive — the browser shows the disc, not the version screen.

Reading the Browser or CD Player version instead of the DVD Player line.

Assuming the model number alone decides it. Two SCPH-390xx units can behave differently; the DVD Player version is the deciding field.

Short answer: All PS2 Slim consoles and Sony Bravia TV units are supported by one universal ISO. Fat (Phat) consoles work only if their DVD Player version is 2.10 (named models only), 2.12, or 3.04. A Fat with DVD Player 3.00 or 3.02 — including every SCPH-500xx — cannot use the prebuilt FreeDVDBoot ISOs.

How to read this list

FreeDVDBoot does not care about your model number first. It cares about your DVD Player firmware version. Boot the console with no disc inserted, press Triangle in the browser, and read the DVD Player line. Then find that version below. Your system language must also be set to English, or the exploit will not trigger — that rule comes straight from CTurt’s README and applies to Slim and Fat alike.

PS2 Slim: one file for all

File: All PS2 Slims – English language.iso (1,366,016 bytes). MD5: 2f79111a91c8b90f4068d8c284dd7716. This covers the early Slims (700xx, 750xx, 770xx) and the late Slims (900xx, all datecodes). You do not need to check a DVD Player version for a Slim. Sony Bravia TV units with an integrated PS2 are listed as supported in the README as well; this site has not published a test of one specific Bravia model, so treat that as README support, not a lab result.

Download the Slim ISO from GitHub first, Terabox mirror second (see the homepage).

Burn it to a DVD-R at the lowest speed and finalise the disc.

Set the console language to English, then boot the disc.

PS2 Fat: only three DVD Player versions

2.10 — certain models only. Working examples named in the README: SCPH-30001 R, SCPH-30000, SCPH-30004 R (with specific ROMGEN codes). SCPH-39004 is listed as not working / todo. Do not assume any other 2.10 machine works.

2.12 — regions U, J, and G. File: the shared 2.10/2.12 ISO (7,344,128 bytes). MD5: e47c861f376df877ce02cbe0c10b97b9.

3.04 — region M tested in emulator only. The README guesses most other regions except J will work, with English set. That is a guess, not a verified result. File: 1,370,112 bytes. MD5: 503415ee98580dd1d18f9d7031af5abd.

Fat models these ISOs do not support

SCPH-500xx (DVD Player 3.00/3.02), DVD Player 2.14 (Sony patched the exploit there), and early Japanese launch models on DVD Player versions outside 2.10/2.12/3.04 are not supported by the prebuilt ISOs. If your Fat shows 3.00, do not keep burning discs hoping one will work — the payload for that version does not exist in this repository. Your honest alternatives are a different entry point (see FreeDVDBoot vs Fortuna) or a newer DVD exploit such as YADE, which is reported to work on 3.00E (see the YADE note).

SCPH-390xx deserves a warning of its own: the PS2 Dev Wiki compatibility list marks it Partial. Some units report disc read errors or a black screen even on a supported version. A failed boot on a 390xx does not automatically mean your burn was bad.

After you know your version

Slim owners go straight to the burn guide. Fat owners with 2.10, 2.12 or 3.04 should double-check the exact region note for their version, then burn the matching file — 2.10 and 2.12 share one file, so there is no separate 2.12 download to hunt for.
